Who Is Most at Risk? An Empirical Analysis of Food Insecurity Determinants in Somalia Using SIHBS 2022 Data
Abstract
Food insecurity remains a major challenge in Somalia, with about 61.4% of households experiencing food insecurity. This study examines the prevalence and determinants of household food insecurity using nationally representative data from SIHB 2022. A frequentist logistic regression model was used to identify key factors associated with food insecurity. The findings reveal significant regional and socioeconomic disparities. Households in Nugaal, Galgadud, and Lower Shabelle were more likely to experience food insecurity, while those in Northwest and Sool were relatively more food secure. Rural households were also more vulnerable than urban households. Moreover, households with access to electricity, receiving income from investments, and benefiting from social protection programs such as food aid, government cash transfers, and charity support were less likely to experience food insecurity. These findings highlight the need for targeted and region-specific interventions. Strengthening social protection programs, improving rural infrastructure and market access, and promoting livelihood diversification are essential strategies to enhance household resilience and reduce food insecurity in Somalia.
